Hovea Curve Jacket & Coat Pattern

I've been wanting to make another quilted coat for many years, but was not satisfied with a pattern. Then I stumbled on the Hovea pattern by Megan Nielsen and plunged in. The biggest part of my decision was based on having detailed instructions, and this one did not disappoint. I also watched several YouTube videos before cutting it out. The assembly went smoothly and I'm planning to make a different version in a few months. The combination of a great instruction booklet and multiple videos has made me a big fan. Thank you to Megan Nielsen and the pattern testers!

I made the quilted coat using Shannon Fraser Designs pattern also. It took way longer to quilt the pieces than put the coat together. It was easy to understand, easy to sew together and fun to wear. I’m going to make the jacket next. It fits well and is big enough to wear a sweater under it. There are so many options to do exactly what I want to.

I haven't sewn a garment in a long time and I remember how hard doing sleeves and collars was - so this pattern was perfect. I've been quilting for a short time and building different skills. I wanted to make a 'draft' coat first which will be followed by a more elaborate hand pieced and appliquéd project. This pattern is great. The step-by-step instruction booklet and videos and online resources were amazing. It is worth every penny. I found my quilt top in a yard sale partially completed and so I finished the quilt top and cut it up for this pattern. While I would not go with this same kind of pattern to make another one of these jackets using an old unwanted quilt to make a car coat, sporting even coverup, etc. would be a great idea.

Love this pattern. It’s super simple in that there are only a few pattern pieces and hardly any markings to worry about, but I spent a lot of time on the make since I quilted the fabric myself (which took ages, might not do that again) and then spent a lot of time hand finishing the binding inside. It’s not necessary to do these things but I did and am pleased with the result. I made View D and can’t wait to wear it! I will use this pattern a lot making different views and possibly also the bathrobe hack. Easy for anyone including beginners especially when supported by the massive number of support content on the blog. Highly recommended.

What a fabulous pattern! It was super easy and quick to make and fit perfectly right out of the box. I didn’t even have to make the usual 1½” deduction to sleeve length that I almost always have to do to patterns. I made the View A Mid Length, unlined, using a pre-quilted stable knit fabric. It presented no problems whatsoever and behaved entirely like a woven fabric although I did have to pay extra attention when applying the collar to the body (the body fronts had stretched out a little and had to be eased a little more than woven would). I finished all my seam allowances and hem edges with purchased double folded bias tape using a Hong Kong finish.

Mods: I added a secret patch pocket to the Right body piece - inside the slanted pocket - for my cellphone or bus pass or whatever. I did this instead of dividing the slanted pocket with topstitching. Also, I added a facing at the back neckline for my label. It also serves to add a bit of support to the back neck.

The only suggestions I’d make with respect to the instructions are: 1) after applying the collar to the body, trim and grade the seam to reduce bulk; and 2) trim the sleeve and body side seams within the hem to reduce bulk before hemming.

I love this garment so much that I’m absolutely going to make it again, probably a cropped version and also a coat length too! A definite winner!!

The pattern was very easy to follow, but the sizing of the armhole is off. It is huge! I am waiting to finish up that part of the coat to have a friend with dressmaking skills help me shape the armhole. I am glad I lengthened the sleeves because taking in what I need to in the armhole will shorten the sleeve. I wanted to make the extension pattern with the quilt block, but will try another pattern for the sleeve.

Great patter easy to wear and make. Do many options that I will definitely be making this several more times. Definitely a keeper

I was given a quilt of my grandmas after she passed away and it never got used. Found this pattern and knew it was meant to be. Made it into a beautiful jacket. Such a great and easy pattern to follow. Really clear instructions and it turned out great.

My jacket turned out perfect and is warm while in cold restaurants. Quick and easy to make.

I'm so pleased with the excellent pattern I purchased from Megan Nielsen. I have pulled my fabric and plan to begin making this exciting coat soon. mjh
