Button up pencil skirt from a men’s dress shirt

Though I called this a pencil skirt in the title, I’m thinking I probably should have called it a mini… but hey who cares what I call it right?  Anyway, just want you to know I didn’t forget about my wardrobe refashion pledge!!! Ok maybe I forgot a little… lol!

Anyway, made this little button front pencil skirt from one of hubby’s old dress shirts. It hasn’t fitted him for years (we were so ridiculously super skinny when we were younger), and I couldn’t bear to throw it away (I’m a total sentimental sap & I remember him wearing it so many times when we were dating). And now that I look back, I can’t believe how young we look! It’s nuts! One things for sure… I obviously had a thing for that brown top & black biker jacket, cos I’m wearing them both on 3 different nights! Oh dear…

I cut if off under the arms, tapered the sides, put darts in the front & back, and rather than a waistband the skirt is faced on the inside (used the sleeves for the facing). Wallah!

And here’s what happens when you have a 9mth old who loves shoes… Your photoshoot gets hijacked!!!

So anyway, I’m not convinced, I dunno … I think I’m pretty happy with this skirt. I don’t think it’s really my style, and maybe a little short, but you live and learn. So what do you think?

Oh you two look so cute! and so does bubs of course. Isn’t it funny looking back at old pics though… oh so young, innocent and naive we all were. I like the skirt alot, good shirt choice, looks like part of a business skirt suit set. It doesn’t look shorter than any of your other skirts you’ve worn though, or maybe its because it’s a pencil and the others are more flowy? xo

  • Cuteness! You guys look gorgeous together! xoxo

Thanks gals! Yeah I think it’s the straightness of it that’s making it feel so short! I tend to like pencil skirts to hit my knee… I think it’s because with the flowy ones when I sit down they cover knee, but with this one it pulls up and all you see is leg! Maybe I’m silly but I’m a little more conscious of that kind of thing now I’m a mommy!

I just started reading your blog–hi :) Found you on the refashion site. You looked great then and you look great now. Maybe just throw some tights underneath?

  • Megan:

Thanks amy :) Glad you stopped by!

  • I love it. So clever!
I really want to try it now, but my boyfriend is twice my size! Maybe I’ll have to op-shop a small sized shirt?

  • Megan:

Hey piglet, I reckon you could totally do it with a large shirt!! You would just need to cut more off the sides and sew them up rather than using the side seams of the shirt as the side seams of the skirt. Probably didn’t explain that well… I’ll try to do a better job later, I’ve gotten a few requests for a how to from the Wardrobe refashion site, maybe that’ll help?

  • [...] lot of you lovely ladies here and over at Wardrobe Refashion requested a tutorial on how to make this skirt that I made from a men’s button front [...]
