My creative process – Sketching

pink-pleated-front-dress-sketchI have a lot of ideas… but I also have a very bad memory. So I always try and get them down on paper immediately… which means I have a very fat notebook! Unfortunately I’m not the best sketcher, my style is very basic and cartoon-y, but I figure at least I try… you play the hand you’re dealt!  When I feel really passionate about something then I draw a lot of pictures, front, back, details… and of course I like to draw a pic of me wearing it too… Well the overly romantic way in which I imagine myself wearing it!! lol! You know what I mean, fabulous hair,  in the wind, much thinner… maybe standing on a cliff?! I’m hopeless…

This is a dress I designed recently, and have been getting ready to make, so I thought I’d take you all with me as I plan it out and make it up.

pink-pleated-front-dress-sketch-detailsI almost always design things in pink. It’s my favourite colour, and so I always go there first. Funnily enough, I rarely actually make things in pink! So who knows what colour this dress will actually end up being. I really like scanning the picture into the computer and using photo editing software, because I can change up the colour a million times without redrawing the design. Of course I”m not the best photoshopper… but you all get the general idea i’m sure!

The basic plan is a peter pan collar, capped sleeves, a button front with pleated ruffles on either side of the plackets, and of course a full gathered skirt. Still deciding on pockets, and how I’m going to get into it (I want only the bodice to be button up for the look, but I will probably need an invisible zip or something so that I can actually put it on! you know hips way bigger than waist). And I can’t really decide whether I’ll make the collar & ruffle contrasting yet… I guess it’ll depend on the fabric choice.

Next step will be drafting a pattern, and maybe a muslin. Depending on how lazy I’m feeling!!!
